Joe Szutz
Ceramic and mixed media sculpture
Ann Arbor Michigan

My approach to making art is active and spontaneous.  I would compare my style to improvisational jazz.  Every piece starts with a basic stylistic theme, like the arrangement or melody in jazz, then builds to completion through a series of events, both planned and unplanned, that could never be repeated in exactly the same way.

What happens to the clay, how it is transformed, built up, altered and combined with other materials, and to the design itself during that process, is essential to the final result. While the finished piece is "permanent," like a recorded jazz improvisation, the spontaneous events in its creation could never be repeated in exactly the same way.

That spontaneity is a defining characteristic of my sculptures, which embody movement and dynamic tension through contrasting and complementary forms, lines, textures and colors, and positive and negative space.  The primary medium is clay, although I frequently include natural wood, stone and metal in the finished piece.
